Are you going to visit the Serengeti on a photographic safari? Are you interested in knowing where the lion prides we study live in the Serengeti or in the Ngorongoro Crater?

The maps on this page will provide you the approximate territory of each lion pride we study in the Serengeti. You can print off these lion pride maps (plus print the history of each lion pride located at Meet the Lions)and take them with you on your tour of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. As you drive up to a lion pride in our study area, you may be able to determine which pride it is and provide some facts to your travel partners on the history of this pride.

Where is the Serengeti?

The Serengeti National Park is located in Tanzania, in East Africa. Most people going on a photographic safari to the Serengeti will either drive or fly from Arusha, Tanzania. The following map shows the location of the Serengeti and some other wildlife areas in Tanzania.

Where does the Lion Research Center conduct its research in the Serengeti?

Within the Serengeti National Park, the Lion Research Center ("LRC") scientists study 15 lion prides and other nomadic lions located in the South-Eastern portion of the Park in addition to studying the prides living in the Ngorongoro Crater. The square area drawn in the map below shows you the approximate study area by the LRC in the Serengeti. Seronera is located at number"1" within our study area, and Naabi Hill is located at number "4" on this map.

Where are the lion pride territories within our Study Area?

We have divided our study area into four smaller maps, numbered 1 through 4 so you can see approximately the territory for each lion pride. Click on these small thumbnail images below to view a larger map to learn where each pride resides. Please keep in mind that these maps are only an approximation of the lion pride territory.

Map 1 covers the northwest portion of our study area and includes such land marks as the Seronera Lodge and Masai Kopkes. In this area you will find the following lion prides. Ngorongoro Crater

The Lion Research Center scientists also study the lion prides in the Ngorongoro Crater. The lion prides are:

  • the Munge Pride lives along the Munge River in the northern quadrat of the Crater floor
  • the Tokitok Pride lives by the Tokitok springs (in the eastern quadrat)
  • the Lake Pride lives between Seneto Springs, Engitati Hill, and where the Munge River enters the Lake (all this is in the southwest quadrat)
  • the Lakette Pride lives around the Lerai forest (in the southern quadrat)
