How to Help

Our work would not be possible without generous contributions of both time and resources by friends of the Lion Research Center. We welcome your support in any of these areas:

Financial contributions
Our research has been supported largely by grants from the National Science Foundation, but such funding is inherently unpredictable. It is imperative that long-term lion studies continue, as studies of this kind supply the information critical to making conservation decisions. Our ultimate goal is to establish an endowment which will ensure the continuation of our work and support lion studies throughout Africa. Meanwhile, we welcome all financial donations. Donations are tax-deductible and can be made directly to the University of Minnesota Foundation, earmarked for the Lion Research Center.

Equipment donations
Field work exacts a heavy toll on research equipment, and we are often in need of replacements. We welcome contributions of field equipment such as radios, cameras, GPS units, laptop computers, printers, binoculars, solar equipment, and vehicles. We are also eager to develop the use of new technologies in the field, and encourage the makers of such technology to contact us. All equipment donations are tax deductible.

Volunteer opportunities for students at the University of Minnesota
We have a number of volunteer opportunites for students at UMN ranging from simple data entry to individual research projects. Opportunites are restricted to research on campus; we are unable to send volunteers to Africa. Seniors are encouraged to inquire about thesis research projects, and interested volunteers should consider the UROP program for financial support.

We gratefully aknowledge recent support from MGM Grand, Flir Systems, Inc., International Bon Ton Toys, National Geographic Magazine and Drew Davies. If you have futher questions about helping the Lion Research Center, please write to west0302@tc.umn.edu.
