Behavior Guide: swimming
Unlike some of the other felids, lions are not particularly fond of water. Only rarely do
they venture in the water, and only for good reason. This picture was shot when lions
discovered a drowned wildebeest in the middle of a river. After one female dragged it
to a small island, her companions joined her, including a mother with very small cubs.
The cubs were reluctant to enter the water, but with encouragement from their mother
they finally took the plunge. Note how the mother follows behind as the cubs swim back
to shore, ready to intercede if anything should go wrong.
