Behavior Guide: threats
In general, lions face few threats from other species in their habitats, but there are
some situations that prove dangerous. Buffalo will sometimes challenge lions and are a
significant cause of lion mortality in the Ngorongoro Crater. Lions will also move out of the way
when they see elephants approaching, and elephants sometimes charge lions to hasten their departure.
Lions may also be attacked by hyenas, especially if they are sick or wounded.
However, the greatest threat to lions
comes from people. Some African tribes still consider hunting lions an important ritual
and consequently, lions generally react to people on foot by quickly retreating.
