Behavior Guide: climbing trees

lioness in tree

Lions generally climb trees to avoid the flies that often pester them or to take advantage of cooling breezes. Contrary to popular opinion, lions may climb trees in any habitat and not solely in Tanzania's Lake Manyara National Park. Young lions are more likely to climb trees than adults, and adult males only rarely climb. This is probably because their added bulk makes it difficult to navigate among branches and thorns, and in particular to get down again.
